Canadian moving to Mexico

Cid Chacón here — Your Real Estate Sherpa in Baja Sur 🧭🇲🇽
If you’re two retired Canadians moving to Mexico and you’re renting first… you’re doing it the smart way. Think of renting as choosing your “base camp” before committing long-term.

🇲🇽 Querétaro vs. Lake Chapala vs. Baja — quick cheat sheet

Choose QUERÉTARO if you want:
🏛️ Colonial city vibes + culture + walkable neighborhoods
🌤️ Milder temps (higher elevation)
🚗 Easy access to other central Mexico destinations
➡️ Great for: couples who want “real Mexico” city life + history + good infrastructure

Choose LAKE CHAPALA / AJIJIC if you want:
👥 One of Mexico’s most established expat/retiree communities
☕ Easy social life + routines
🌿 Mild climate + lakeside lifestyle
✈️ Close access to Guadalajara for flights + services
➡️ Great for: community + comfort + “plug-and-play” retirement setup

Choose BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR if you want:
🌊 Ocean lifestyle + sunshine + outdoor living
🐚 Beach walks, water sports, desert-meets-sea vibe
🌴 International communities (La Paz / Los Cabos / Todos Santos / East Cape)
➡️ Great for: people who want coast + nature + “vacation energy” year-round

🌵 Baja isn’t one vibe — it’s several micro-markets:

📍 La Paz – local, livable, great malecón, often better value
📍 San José del Cabo / Corridor – more amenities, more resort feel, usually pricier
📍 Todos Santos – artsy, slower pace, small-town charm
📍 East Cape (Los Barriles / La Ribera) – laid-back, beach towns, quieter, less infrastructure

🔑 Two non-negotiables anywhere in Mexico:

  1. 🏥 Healthcare access (how close are you to clinics/hospitals you trust?)
  2. 🛡️ Safety = neighborhood-by-neighborhood (Mexico changes fast from zone to zone)

🧭 Sherpa Plan (simple and effective)

✅ Rent 30–45 days in your top 2 options
✅ Live like locals (grocery runs, walking routes, day-to-day life)
✅ Then decide with confidence — not guesses

If you tell me:
📌 your monthly rental budget
📌 beach vs. city preference
📌 whether you want to drive or stay walkable
📌 how often you’ll fly back to Canada
…I’ll suggest the best neighborhoods to “test” first in each area.
